What You'll Learn

The world of education is fast-moving and fast-growing.  Educators today face new challenges every single day, whether in the classroom or the boardroom.  On this cruise we intend to bring aboard a wide variety of experienced educators from around the country or even the world.  We will share best-practices on how to teach and lead.  Depending on the mix of participants, we may have both teachers and administrators and thus will have concurrent sessions or “tracks”….one for administrators and one for teachers, plus sessions with everyone together.

Note:  This cruise is best when you bring an intact team of educators from one district or region or charter/public school system so we can target directly to your unique needs.  However, we also can invite single advisors along and the exact mix of content will depend on the makeup of the participants.

Optional:  Receive a organization-wide staff Vital Signs survey and personal consultation ($4000 value) that will identify your organization's strengths and weaknesses.  This is good for an intact or larger group from within one district or school.

Optional but Recommended:  One month prior we can set up our Strength-based Educator 360 Leadership Profile.  This confidential and anonymous instrument allows your direct reports, peers and others to rate you in a series of questions aligned to eight categories of leadership success.  We will provide you the results in a private, eyes-only report, along with a self-guided interpretive workbook for you to use in creating your own personal ILDP (Individual Leadership Development Plan).  We can provide one-on-one coaching on board and after the cruise.  “Vision is the breakfast of champions, Feedback is the lunch of champions and Self-correction is the dinner of champions” (Stephen R. Covey). Let’s give you a feast and a plan!  To see a sample of the report, click here.

The first night we are on board, we will take some time to find your north star - the central purpose that you and your school revolve around. Additionally, when you arrive on board, you will receive a copy of national bestseller The 4 Disciplines of Execution, which will be the foundation for many of the topics we discuss throughout the seminar.

In the two days, we will organize into concurrent tracked sessions to maximize the value for everybody who comes, depending of if you are a teacher or an administrator.  Sample content can include:

Morning:  Everyone together (administrators and teachers)

Customers Only Want Two Things: Winning Loyalty in a Competitive World

Start by experiencing the full workshop that we have successfully taught all around the world.  Customers only want two things:  solve my problem and leave me feeling great about the experience.   Some educators today just don’t “get it”…they don’t grasp that you are in customer service as much as any business.  Parents today have many choices for educating their children: private school, charter school, public school, home schooling and even on-line school.   Your students are a key to your success because they support school programs and activities, study harder, bully less and simply do better across the board.  Loyal parents support school activities and bond issues, trust you with their children and give you more instructional time by interfering less.  In this session you will receive our renowned deck of Hot Tip Cards and many other tools, including a copy of Kevin’s new book.

Administrator Track:

Morning: The Power and Skills of Strategic Level Leadership:  We will learn the difference between strategic, operational and tactical leadership in education and how you can best “stay in your lane,” providing clear vision and strategy, yet also know how to do the right amount of LBWA: Leadership by Wandering Around.  We will discuss the four imperatives of leadership, and how to build trust as an administrator/senior leader.  You will receive some great ideas and tools on how to think strategically, ahead of Day Two’s deeper dive into strategic thinking.

  • Learn how you can use Wildly Important Goals to guide your school or district towards sustainable results

  • Plan and build scoreboards that will help you hold your educators accountable and point them towards an incredibly successful shared future

  • Discover and demonstrate how to successfully delegate responsibilities to others in a way that will empower them and enable you to free up your time to drive the team forward.

Afternoon: Leading Change:  As an administrator, you must become adept at inspiring and leading your school, district or teams through change.  Here we will learn how to lead change, based on John Kotter’s book, “Leading Change” and other tools.  Identify the eight things that derail change initiatives and how to overcome them.

Morning:  Creating a Sustainable Succession Plan. (Two hours)

Many companies are reaching the point where it is time for one generation of leaders to pass the baton to a new generation. Creating a sustainable succession plan should be an integral part of everything that you do, starting with hiring and promoting your next generation of leaders. This course will help you to identify, train, and keep the people you want leading your school for the next generation.

Morning/Afternoon: Strategic Thinking and Planning Deep-Dive

Here we will learn practical nuts-and-bolts ways of thinking strategically and creating or revising your strategic plan.  This will be highly customized around your school’s situation and current needs.

  • Create a compelling vision that will transform and propel your team to new heights.

  • Draft out, discuss and revise your current strategic plan.

  • Develop WIG’s (Wildly Important Goals) to help drive the strategy into execution.
